ST. AUGUSTINE – Lander University made all three of its free throws with less than 21 seconds left to break up a tie game and win a hard-fought 81-78 contest over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Lander won its 11
th game in a row to improve to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler suffered its fourth consecutive loss and fell to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play. All three conference losses for the Saints have been by a combined 11 points.
Teosha Ray scored a season-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace Flagler. She scored 19 of those 26 points in the second half.
Parker Nayman nearly doubled her season point and rebound totals in one game as she recorded her first career double-double with 19 points and 17 rebounds, both career-highs.
Treva Mason tallied 16 points and seven rebounds.
Alex Alford tallied a game-high seven assists.
Flagler grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and turned those into 24 second chance points. The Saints forced 24 Lady Bearcat turnovers.
Ty'hesha Reynolds scored a team-high 20 points for Lander. Bre Crum added 16 points, five rebounds and four assists while Portia McCray and Kayla West combined to score 24 points and grab 13 rebounds. Breshay Johnson tacked on 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Bearcats outscored the Saints in the paint 48-32. Lander also excelled in transition scoring 18 points.
The game featured 11 ties and 20 lead changes. The score was tied at the half, 34-all.
Mason gave the Saints a three-point lead (77-74) after a layup and two made free throws with 1:15 left to play.
But Crum tied the game at 78 after making a layup with 21 seconds left and was fouled on the play. She converted the free throw to give Lander a 79-78 lead.
Nayman missed a 15-foot jumper with 11 seconds left and Johnson gathered the rebound. Flagler's
DeAsha Campbell fouled Reynolds, who received the outlet pass, with six seconds left and Reynolds sank both free throws.
Alford's 3-point shot at the buzzer was just a touch too long as the ball hit the left side of the rim.
Flagler will turn right back around and hit the road as it will play at the University of South Carolina Aiken on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
