ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College proved to be too much in the second half for Trinity Baptist College in an 81-46 victory Monday night in a non-conference women's basketball game Monday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler improved to 5-12 on the season while Trinity Baptist, a National Christian College Athletic Association Division II team from Jacksonville, fell to 4-11.
Kiana Stafford led a balanced scoring attack for the Saints with a team-high 11 points. She was a perfect 5- for 5 from the field. All 12 Flagler players scored at least one point.
Treva Mason and
Ditara Pack each scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Tiffany Hodge closed with six points and collected a team-high seven rebounds.
Alex Alford dished out a season-high nine assists.
The Saints registered their best shooting percentage (52.2%) since shooting 52.4% against Columbus State University on Jan. 21, 2013. Flagler scorched the rims in the second half to the tune of 58.8% (20-34). The Saints dominated the smaller Eagles inside, holding a 48-16 advantage in scoring in the paint. Flagler also forced 21 turnovers and cashed those in for 25 points. The Saints also scored 22 points in transition.
Amber Van Wieren led all scorers with 16 points, 14 of which came in the first half. She sank four 3-pointers. Jalena Hawkins grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and added five points.
Trinity Baptist was held to 25.9% (15-58) shooting from the field for the game. The Eagles struggled in the second half shooting just 20.7% (6-29).
The Saints sprinted out to a quick 9-0 lead, but Van Wieren knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and Diantrah Walker and Tatiyanna Thomas each added a trey to give the Eagles a 14-11 lead. Thomas' triple gave Trinity Baptist the three-point lead.
Flagler closed the first half on a 9-2 run to take a 33-25 lead into the break.
After a Hawkins layup in the opening moments of the second half cut Flagler's lead to six (33-27), the Saints went on a 22-2 run over the next 7:17 to put the game away. The Eagles went 1-10 from the field and committed four turnovers.
