No. 12 Lady Cougars defeat Saints, 65-58

ST. AUGUSTINE – Michelle Mitchell put on a show as she scored 20 of her game-high 32 points in the first half and grabbed 12 rebounds to help lead No. 12 (USA TODAY Top 25 Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll) Columbus State University to a 65-58 win over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference game Wednesday evening at Flagler Gymnasium.

Columbus State extended its winning streak to five games and improved to 19-1 overall and 10-1 in the Peach Belt. Flagler dropped to 5-13 overall and 2-9 in conference play.

The Lady Cougars never trailed from the opening tip to the final horn and used a 16-6 run to close out the first half and take a 42-28 lead. Columbus State came out of the half on a 9-2 run to take its largest lead of the game (51-30).

The Saints, undaunted, went on a 20-4 run over a 10:28 span to close to within five (55-50) with 5:33 left in the game. The Lady Cougars only made 2 of their 10 shots from the field in that run by the Saints.

Ashley Asouzu added nine points and eight rebounds for Columbus State. Carrie Washington tacked on six points, six rebounds and three blocked shots.

The Lady Cougars shot a resounding 59.4% (19-32) from the field in the first half, but struggled in the second half shooting only 30.8%.

Treva Mason scored a season-high 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for her team-leading eighth double-double of the season. DeAsha Campbell added 12 points and four assists while Alex Alford came off the bench to tack on nine points.

Flagler out-rebounded the PBC leaders in that category 39-37. The Saints grabbed 19 offensive rebounds which led to 20 second chance points.

Flagler will head north on Saturday (Jan. 31) to take on the University of North Carolina Pembroke at 1:30 p.m.
