MORROW, Ga. –
Keshaun Hamilton had a banner day with a season-high 28 points to go along with 11 rebounds, but Flagler College couldn't hold off a late rally by Clayton State University in route to a 73-65 victory in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Athletics & Fitness Center.
Clayton State won its third consecutive game to improve to 12-4 overall and 5-3 in the Peach Belt. Flagler dropped to 7-8 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
Hamilton tied a school record as he shot a perfect 100% from not only the field, but from the foul line as well. He made all 11 of his field goal attempts as well as all six of his free throw attempts. The last time a Flagler player was perfect from the field, with a minimum of eight attempts, was Ben De La Cruz who went 8 for 8 at Morris College, Jan. 20, 2007.
Jerrell Oxendine and
Lydell Manigo added 14 and 10 points apiece, respectively.
The Saints shot a steady 47.1% (16-34) from the field in the first half and held a 38-29 lead. The defense held the Lakers to just 35.3% (12-34) shooting. But the percentages were reversed in the second half with Flagler at 36.4 and Clayton State at 45.5.
Kelsey Terry led the Lakers with 24 points and he added eight rebounds. Jamil McKee recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds while JC Bonny tacked on 10 points.
Clayton State out-scored Flagler inside 36-18 and the Lakers induced 19 turnovers which led to another 20 points.
The game remained close throughout with score being tied eight times and the lead changed hands 12 times. Flagler had its largest lead (32-22) late in the first half and Clayton State led by eight late in the game.
The Lakers trailed for most of the second half and finally caught the Saints after Bonny was sent to the line with 5:37 left in the game, down by two points. He sank both free throws to tie the game at 59-all.
Flagler missed its chance to regain the lead and Clayton State took advantage as McKee put back his own missed layup to give the Lakers a two-point lead (61-59).
Dantez Bennamon stole the ball from Manigo on Flagler's next time up the floor and went in for a layup as Clayton State extended the lead to four (63-59) with 4:50 left. The Saints could not close the gap the rest of the game.
Flagler will head to Milledgeville, Georgia to face Georgia College on Monday (Jan. 19) at 3:30 p.m. in another Peach Belt Conference tilt.
