MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. –
Jerrell Oxendine scored seven of his career-high 25 points in overtime as Flagler College escaped with an 81-78 win over Georgia College in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Monday afternoon at the Centennial Center.
Flagler improved to 8-8 overall and 3-6 in the Peach Belt. Georgia College (8-10, 2-7 PBC) suffered its fifth consecutive loss and the seventh in its last eight games.
Keshaun Hamilton made the first of his two free throws to give Flagler a 52-37 lead with 11:42 to go which capped a 21-7 spurt to open the half. However, a 28-13 run by Georgia College over the next 11 minutes tied the game at 65. It was Juwan Hubbard who tied the score after making the second of his two free throws with 42 seconds left.
The Bobcats took a lead (67-66) after a Larrentis Thomas layup with seven seconds remaining in regulation. Oxendine drove the lane, on the other end, and drew a four with 1.1 seconds left. He missed the first free throw, but sank the second to send the game into overtime.
After Thomas made a pair of free throws in the opening seconds of overtime, Flagler went on a 9-0 run and held on to win.
Kessler Bell sank a three-pointer to give the Saints a lead (72-69) they would not relinquish.
The Bobcats made it interesting drawing to within one point (79-78) after a Dwight Anderson three-pointer, but Oxendine was sent to the foul line again and calmly made both free throws to seal the victory.
Oxendine added seven rebounds to go along with his team-leading point total to lead Flagler. He made 7 of his 12 shots from the field, made three 3-pointers and was 8 of 11 from the free throw line. Hamilton added 13 points and season-best 16 rebounds.
Matt Clark added 12 points coming off the bench while
Lydell Manigo tacked on 11 points and nine rebounds. Bell contributed nine points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
Flagler dominated Georgia College on the glass with a 52-39 rebounding advantage. The Saints committed 19 turnovers, 11 of those coming in the second half. Those led to 18 Bobcat points.
Terrell Harris led Georgia College with 25 points and added 11 rebounds to complete the double-double. Anderson added 17 points while Thomas contributed 16 points and eight rebounds. Ryan Blumenthal tacked on 11 points and six rebounds.
The Bobcats struggled in shooting from the field for the game with a 36.2 percentage, but was victimized in overtime where they made just 2 of 11 (18.2%). Georgia College did make 20 of its 29 free throws in the game.
Flagler is now 6-0 when it makes 10 or more three-pointers in a game. The Saints made 12 this afternoon.
Flagler returns home to take on Georgia Regents University Augusta on Saturday (Jan. 24) at 3:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
