AMERICUS, Ga. –
Treva Mason's basket with 41 seconds left gave Flagler College a lead it would not relinquish in a 59-56 win at Georgia Southwestern State University in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday evening at the Storm Dome.
Flagler snapped its seven-game losing streak and improved to 3-10 overall and 1-6 in the Peach Belt. The last win for the Saints came before Thanksgiving (Nov. 26), a 66-49 win over the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. Georgia Southwestern lost its third game in a row and dropped to 9-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
After Mason's layup put the Saints ahead by a basket, Tiara Thompson of the Lady 'Canes was fouled at the other end with 16 seconds left. She made the first of two free throw attempts and the follow up by Ja'Quesha Sealer was missed and Flagler's
DeAsha Campbell quickly corralled the rebound. Campbell was then fouled by Shatoria Hudson, which was her fifth foul, and Campbell sank both free throws to give the Saints a 59-56 lead.
Thompson's three-pointer at the buzzer hit the rim and then the top of the backboard.
Mason did almost all of her damage in the second half as she scored 15 of her 17 points and grabbed five of her six rebounds. She was one of four Flagler players to score in double figures. Campbell added 15 points on 6 of 10 shooting while
Teosha Ray and
Tiffany Hodge each tallied 10 points. Hodge also added six rebounds to go along with her season-high point total.
Alex Alford and
Allie Mano each tallied four assists.
The Saints were buoyed by their best shooting percentage of the season from the free throw line, 73.3% (11-15), all of which came in the second half. Flagler also shot its second-highest field goal percentage of the season, 42.1% (24-57), which included a 44% (11-25) in the second half alone.
Thompson led four Georgia Southwestern players in double-figures with 16 points and she grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Kenyona Armstrong and Yvonna Dunkley each added 12 points while Hudson chipped in with 10 points before fouling out.
The Lady 'Canes turned the ball over 22 times which led to 18 points for the Saints. Georgia Southwestern won the rebounding battle 36-30, but were out-scored in the paint 38-22.
The Lady 'Canes led at the half, 27-26. The game featured nine ties and nine lead changes.
Flagler returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 17) at Clayton State University in another conference tilt. The game is scheduled to tip at 1:30 p.m. at Morrow, Georgia.
