AMERICUS, Ga. – Darius Redding and Deric Rudolph combined to score 34 points and grab 12 rebounds to help lead Georgia Southwestern State University to a 71-57 win over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at the Storm Dome.
Georgia Southwestern extended its winning streak to two games and evened its overall record at 7-7 and went to 2-5 in the Peach Belt. Flagler had its two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 7-7 overall and 2-5 in league play.
Redding scored 17 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists for the Hurricanes. Rudolph added 17 points and five rebounds while Kevin Burnell came off the bench to provide 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Josh Birchfield scored all of his 10 points in the first half.
Georgia Southwestern shot 55.2% (16-29) in the first half and held a 39-28 lead at the break. The Hurricanes out-rebounded the Saints 39-27 and had 13 offensive rebounds which led to 17 second chance points. Georgia Southwestern was opportunistic on the defensive end as it forced nine Flagler turnovers and turned those into 18 points.
Jerrell Oxendine scored a game-high 21 points for the Saints. He was 8 of 13 from the field and sank three 3-pointers.
Keshaun Hamilton added 10 points.
Lydell Manigo chipped in with nine points and he grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
The Hurricanes opened the game on a 7-0 run and then used a 9-0 run midway through the second half to pull ahead with a double-digit lead. Georgia Southwestern never trailed in the game.
Flagler used its own 12-0 run midway through the second half to pull to within seven (56-49), but could not get any closer.
Flagler will travel to Morrow, Georgia on Saturday (Jan. 17) for a 3:30 p.m. tip at Clayton State University.
