ST. AUGUSTINE –
Dennis Diaz and
Lydell Manigo each scored career-highs with 29 and 26 points, respectively, as they helped Flagler College roll to a 94-82 win over the University of South Carolina Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler extended its winning streak to two games as it improved to 7-6 overall and 2-4 in the Peach Belt. USC Aiken suffered its second consecutive loss and fell to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Diaz scored 16 of his game-high 29 points in the first half and he made 8 of his 15 shots from the field. He was nearly flawless from the free throw line as he made 10 of 11. Manigo tallied a career-best 26 points on 11 of 14 shooting from the field. He added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Kessler Bell contributed 11 points, four rebounds and three steals while
Keshaun Hamilton grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and just missed out on a double-double with nine points.
Jerrell Oxendine added nine points and tallied a game-high five assists.
Desmond Gibson provided eight points and four rebounds in a reserve role.
Flagler shot 59.3% (35-59) from the field which included sinking 61.8% (21-34) in the first half alone. The Saints held a 52-35 lead at the break. Flagler clamped down on USC Aiken's three-point shooting this afternoon. In last Monday's game, the Pacers drained 14 three-pointers on route to an 89-73 win. Today, USCA could only sink six 3-pointers.
Hendrix Emu led the Pacers with 19 points and seven rebounds coming off the bench while Andre' Anthony provided 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. Grant Harris tallied 12 points and Caleb Stewart came off the bench to tack on 11 points.
Flagler used a 15-3 run early in the first half and led by double figures the rest of the way. Diaz capped the run with a driving layup off of a fastbreak and was fouled on the play. He sank the free throw to complete the old-fashioned three-point play with 11:49 left to give the Saints a 28-15 lead.
The lead would swell to as many as 22 points (44-22) in the opening half.
Flagler will take its winning streak on the road next week, Jan. 14, against Georgia Southwestern State University at 7:30 p.m. at Americus.
