ST. AUGUSTINE – Walter Shinn and Colin Crothers '84 were inducted as the 11
th class of the Flagler College Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday, May 17 at a banquet at Flagler's Solarium. The event is part of the annual Alumni Weekend (May 15-18) at Flagler College.
The Flagler College Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 2004 to honor student-athletes and administrators who made a major contribution to the intercollegiate sports program while at Flagler, as well as a significant impact in their community after graduating and since then 47 people and one team have been inducted, including this year's class.
Crothers was a three-time NAIA All-American from 1982-84. In 1982 and 1983, he reached the national quarterfinals, and in 1984, he and Peter Ryan advanced to the NAIA doubles finals. Currently, Crothers is in his 16
th season as the head women's tennis coach at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. He has recorded the most wins, as a coach, in the history of the program and has coached the team to its first national ranking, No. 65, in 2013.
Shinn retired at the conclusion of the spring season, a season in which Flagler amassed a record of 16-5 overall and 11-2 in the Peach Belt Conference. In his 35 years at the helm of the women's program, Shinn has amassed an overall record of 536-211 and has coached his teams to five consecutive NAIA national titles (1987-88-89-90-91). He was named the NAIA Coach of the Year in each of those five seasons and was inducted into the NAIA Coaches Hall of Fame in 2000. Shinn was selected as the ITA/Wilson Coach of the Year. In the 1991-92 season, he started his 22-year career as the head men's tennis coach, while still serving in the same capacity on the women's side. In that time he posted a 274-159 record, with his last year coming in 2012-13. Shinn has the distinction of being one of a handful of coaches to receive the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year award in both men's and women's tennis.
