Flagler women fall short against Young Harris

ST. AUGUSTINE – DeAsha Campbell scored a season-high 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds but Flagler College came up on the short end of the 48-47 contest against Young Harris College in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

Young Harris improved to 4-5 overall and evened its record in the Peach Belt to 1-1. Flagler lost its third game in a row and fell to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Campbell made 8 of her 18 shots from the field for the Saints. Treva Mason recorded her second consecutive double-double and fourth of the season with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Teosha Ray added eight points and seven rebounds.

The Saints were held 15 points below its season scoring average (62.3) going into the game.

Peyton Robertson led a balanced scoring attack for the Mountain Lions with 11 points. Chan Fann came off the bench to score six points and grab five rebounds while Shereese Williams collected a team-high six rebounds.

Young Harris out-rebounded Flagler 39-37 and grabbed 114 offensive boards while led to 12 second chance points.

The game was close throughout with seven ties and nine lead changes. Neither team had larger than a five point lead.

Robertson tied the game at 23 with 15 seconds left to go in the half after making the second of two free throws. That score would hold going into the half.

Ray hit a three-pointer with 7:04 left to play giving the Saints a 37-36 lead. It was Flagler's first lead since Jasmine Celestin's pull-up jumper with 47 seconds left in the first half (23-22).

The next time down the court, Briana Bell found an open Rachel Harrell who knocked down a three-pointer to wipe out Flagler's lead and give Young Harris a 39-37 advantage. The lead would swell to five (45-40) after a pair of free throws by Robertson with three minutes left remaining.

Campbell scored consecutive baskets for the Saints to trim the deficit to one (45-44) with 1:54 to play.

A layup by Robertson with 1:23 left to go gave Young Harris just enough breathing room (47-44).

Mason was fouled with seven seconds, down by three points. She made both shots and Flagler fouled immediately. Jasmine Knight missed her free throw shot with five seconds left and Campbell's made dash down the right sideline and heave at the buzzer went for not.

Flagler will now break for the holidays and return to the court on Jan. 3 against Lander University at 1:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
