Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Saints fall in shootout with the Mountain Lions, 93-92

ST. AUGUSTINE – Forty minutes was not enough to decide Saturday's Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game between Flagler College and Young Harris College at Flagler Gymnasium. Young Harris prevailed in overtime 93-92.

Young Harris won its second consecutive game and improved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt. The Mountain Lions have won four of their five games by six points or less. Flagler suffered its fourth straight set-back to fall to 5-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Saints have lost all four games by seven or fewer points.

Flagler trailed by as many as 11 (57-46) in the second half, but would mount a comeback late. The Saints went on a 22-11 run that started midway in the second half and Jerrell Oxendine's pull-up jumper inside the lane with 2:20 left in regulation gave Flagler a 74-73 lead to end the spurt. That was the Saints' first lead since 8:05 in the first half (20-19).

Later, Keshaun Hamilton buried a three-pointer to give Flagler a 77-76 lead with 1:20 to go, but Herdie Lawrence came right back down on the other end and drained a trey for the Mountain Lions to put them back on top 79-77. Lydell Manigo tied the game at 79 with 52 seconds left on a baseline layup and was fouled on the play. He missed the free throw but after a Young Harris timeout with 46 seconds left, Flagler got the ball back on a steal by Hamilton. Flagler had a shot to win it at the buzzer, but the shot went off the front rim.

In overtime, only two players for Young Harris, Kevin Altidor and C.J. Wilson, did any scoring for the Mountain Lions with seven points apiece. Flagler took an early five-point lead (87-82) in the extra session after a Hamilton 12-foot jumper, but the Mountain Lions charged back and took a three-point lead (92-89) after a dunk by Altidor with 31 seconds left.

That lead was quickly erased by a trey by Oxendine with 20 seconds to go and it appeared a second overtime would be looming. However, with 1.1 seconds left in overtime, Altidor was fouled in the paint by Oxendine. Altidor sank the first to break the tie and purposely missed the second shot. Kessler Bell grabbed the rebound and Flagler called a quick timeout with 0.8 seconds left. The Saints needed to drive the length of the court and a desperation shot at the buzzer was off target.

Hamilton led five Flagler players in double figures with 24 points and completed the double-double with 11 rebounds. He also added three assists and blocked three shots. Dennis Diaz added 15 points, six rebounds and five assists while Manigo tallied 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Oxendine tallied 14 points while Bell contributed 12 points and nine rebounds.

Flagler committed 16 turnovers which Young Harris took advantage of and scored 28 points. The Saints shot a sizzling 58.6% (17-29) in the second half to pull even after trailing 40-33 at the half.

Wilson led all scorers with 36 points and also tallied six assists for Young Harris. Altidor recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Lawrence chipped in with 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. Isaiah Johnson tacked on 11 points and six rebounds.

There were six ties and 13 lead changes in the game.

Flagler will break for the holidays and return to the court on Jan. 3 against Lander University at 3:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
