No. 25 Bearcats hold off Saints, 80-68

ST. AUGUSTINE – Jerrell Oxendine's game-high 21 points were not enough as Flagler College lost to No. 25 (NABC Division II Top 25) Lander University 80-68 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

Lander remained perfect through 12 games this season and is 4-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler lost its fifth game in a row and is now 5-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Oxendine made 8 of his 19 field goal attempts and added five rebounds as well as a team-best five assists for the Saints. Lydell Manigo scored 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds and tallied four steals while Dennis Diaz and Matt Clark each added 11 points. Desmond Gibson also grabbed eight rebounds and tacked on a pair of blocked shots.

Kiair Crouch led Lander with 20 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field. J.R. Washington recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds while Mike Lee came off the bench to add 14 points. Tobiasz Hose tacked on 11 points and six rebounds.

The Bearcats went on a 9-0 spurt late in the first half, with the help of 3-pointers by Washington and Marco Morales, to take a 45-28 lead and then went into the half with a 45-31 advantage.

The Saints kept fighting into the second half as they cut into the deficit, trimming it to six (60-54) after a Gibson basket with 6:44 left.

Lander answered with a 17-5 run to take its largest lead (77-59) after a pair of free throws by Crouch with 1:54 left.

Flagler heads out on the road for the first time in Peach Belt play on Monday (Jan. 5) at the University of South Carolina Aiken at 7:30 p.m.
