Treva Mason recorded her third double-double of the season with a team-high 18 points and 13 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the University of North Georgia downed Flagler College 75-68 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball mutual opener Thursday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
North Georgia extended its winning streak to three games and improved to 9-1 overall and 1-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler suffered its second consecutive loss and dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
DeAsha Campbell added 14 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals for the Saints while
Alex Alford chipped in with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Kat Ortolani tacked on 12 points and five rebounds in a reserve role.
The Saints forced 18 Nighthawk turnovers and converted those in for 20 points. Flagler made just 14 of its 25 free throw attempts (56%).
Kelsey Hutchins recorded a double-double of her own for North Georgia with a pair of game-highs with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Stephanie Huffman added 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Cierra Jackson tallied 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Kaylee Akin came off the bench to provide an additional 11 points.
North Georgia shot a steady 47.4% (27-57) from the field and made 16 of 20 (80%) from the free throw line.
The first half was played close throughout with no team having a lead larger than seven points. The Nighthawks took a 34-29 lead into the break.
After Mason sank a pair of free throws to pull the Saints to within one (36-35), the Nighthawks went on a 21-5 run over the next 8:05. Huffman capped the run when she made the front end of two free throw attempts with 8:20 left to play. That gave North Georgia its largest lead of the game (57-40).
The Saints trimmed the deficit to eight (73-65) with 19 seconds left.
Flagler hosts Young Harris College on Saturday (Dec. 20) at 1:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
