Saints second half rally not enough in 79-68 loss

ST. AUGUSTINE – Treva Mason scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds but it wasn't enough as Eckerd College downed Flagler College 79-68 in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday evening at Flagler Gymnasium.

Eckerd improved to 2-1 overall while Flagler remains in search of its first win after three games.

Rana Thomas scored a game-high 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field to pace Eckerd, a member of the Sunshine State Conference. Trine Kasernagi tallied 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Ivana Grbic just missed a triple-double with a game-high 10 assists, a game-high nine rebounds and she scored eight points.

The Tritons shot a red-hot 71.4% (30-42) from the field for the game and also hit 70% (14-20) of their free throw attempts. Eckerd took advantage of its size inside and tallied 30 of its 79 points in the paint.

Mason made 7-of-her-12 shots from the field and seven of her eight rebounds were on the offensive glass. Teosha Ray added a season-high 16 points as she knocked down three 3-pointers and made 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Jasmine Celestin added 11 points while Kat Ortolani supplied 10 points and five rebounds. DeAsha Campbell dished out six assists and she scored six of her eight points from the charity stripe.

Flagler shot 33.3% (22-66) from the field but made 72% (18-25) from the foul line. The Saints forced 26 Triton turnovers and cashed them in for 20 points.

The Saints trailed by as many as 18 in the first half, but cut the deficit down to 13 (38-25) at the half, and pulled to within two (62-60) after a transition basket by Campbell with 3:02 left in the game. The Tritons closed the game on a 17-8 run.

Next up for the Saints is another home game on Saturday (Nov. 22) against Ave Maria University at 2:30 p.m.
