TAMPA, Fla. – Flagler College's
Treva Mason recorded a double-double with game-highs in points (20) and rebounds (15), but it wasn't enough as Florida Southern College took the win 62-49 in a non-conference women's basketball game in the Spartan Challenge Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Bob Martinez Athletic Center.
Florida Southern improves to 2-0 while Flagler leaves with a 0-2 record.
Mason made 7-of-11 from the field and was 6-of-10 from the free throw stripe to pace the Saints. She had seven offensive boards and even added three steals to her line.
DeAsha Campbell was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line and finished with 11 points, five rebounds and three steals before fouling out.
Kat Ortolani added 10 points.
Teosha Ray chipped in with six points and seven rebounds.
Flagler struggled in shooting from the field with a 28.8 (17-59) percentage.
Sydni Payne scored a team-high 13 points for the Moccasins. She made all six of her free throw attempts. Gianna Vastola recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Christin Strawbridge added eight points and nine rebounds. Syerra Davis came off the bench to contribute five points and eight boards.
The Mocs shot 44.4% (12-27) in the first half and took a 35-24 lead into the break. Florida Southern cooled off in the second half shooting only 23.1% (6-26). The Mocs forced 22 Saints' turnovers and cashed those into 21 points. Conversely, Flagler forced 24 Florida Southern turnovers but was only able to convert those into 11 points.
The Mocs used a 12-2 run just under the 10-minute mark in the first half and never looked back.
The Saints used a 14-4 run of their own in the second half to pull to within six (52-46) with 2:06 remaining after a Campbell layup. That would be as close as Flagler would get the rest of the way.
Flagler will take on its third consecutive Sunshine State Conference member on Wednesday (Nov. 19) in Eckerd College. The game will be the home opener for the Saints and will tip off at 5:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
