TAMPA, Fla. –
Treva Mason and
DeAsha Campbell combined to score 28 points and grab 10 rebounds but it wasn't enough as Flagler College lost its season opener to No. 14 (USA TODAY Division II Top 25) University of Tampa 58-56 in the first round of the Spartan Challenge Tournament Friday afternoon at the Bob Martinez Athletic Center.
Today was the season opener for both teams.
Mason made 7-of-9 shots from for 14 points and also grabbed eight rebounds. Campbell also tallied 14 points and she dished out two assists to go along with two steals.
Alex Alford added nine points and a team-high three steals.
Aisha Rodney tallied a team-high 12 points coming off of the bench for Tampa. Juliana Cavallaro recorded a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Ellen Nurmi added nine points.
Flagler's
Allie Mano sank a 3-pointer with eight seconds to go in the game to cut the deficit to 56-54. Nurmi was fouled and sank both free throws to put the Spartans back in front 58-54 and then Campbell made a layup at the buzzer for the Saints.
Flagler takes on Florida Southern College tomorrow (Nov. 15) at noon.
