ST. AUGUSTINE –
Jimmy Wear put Flagler College on the board in the 19
th minute but two second half goals propelled the University of South Carolina Aiken to a 2-1 win in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Monday night at Saints Field.
USC Aiken won its third consecutive match and improved to 8-2-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the Peach Belt. Four of the Pacers' wins have been by one goal. Flagler had its two-match winning streak snapped and fell to 5-4-1 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play.
Sandre Duncan broke a 1-all tie when he knocked in Andre Simmond's corner kick in the 54
th minute. Duncan was situated at the back post and managed to get a shot off in a sea of bodies around the goal box.
Noel Mais scored the equalizer as he converted a penalty kick in the 53
rd minute.
Wear scored his first goal of the season when he took a pass that
Simeon Wickli flicked into the penalty box and over a Pacer defender. Wear went buried a shot under the cross bar.
Jonny Cosgrove returned to the lineup this evening and had an opportunity in the 85
th minute to tie the score at 2-all with a penalty kick. The ball caromed off the cross bar and the Pacers got the ball out of their defensive third in a hurry.
Joshua Poissant collected three saves for USC Aiken while
Lex Craggs recorded four for Flagler.
USC Aiken out-shot Flagler 17-14 and held a 12-7 advantage in corner kicks.
Flagler will hit the road for a pair of games this weekend. The trip starts with a date at conference-rival University of Montevallo on Saturday (Oct. 11) at 7:30 p.m. Central.
