ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College and the University of North Carolina Pembroke have met eight times and in four of those games the difference was only one goal. That was the case tonight with Flagler taking a 2-0 lead, but it had to hold on to defeat UNC Pembroke 2-1 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Saturday night at Saints Field.
Flagler has posted back-to-back wins in conference play to improve to 5-3-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the Peach Belt. The Saints are 7-0-1 all-time against the Braves. UNCP suffered its first loss since Sept. 13 and dropped to 2-4-3 overall and 1-2-2 in league play.
Just 18 seconds into the second half
Thomas Gallitz found a sprinting
Jean Vega on the right side of the 18-yard box and Vega buried the ball into bottom right corner of the goal to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.
Flagler would need that insurance goal as Sam Miles got the Braves on the board when he knocked in a nice cross pass by Brett Luccia that went across the penalty box to a diving Miles at the back post where he touched the ball just inside the left post in the 78
th minute.
The Braves continued to apply some pressure, but could never find the equalizer.
Eamonn Moore scored the game's first goal when he headed in a superb service from
Juan Membreno in the 34
th minute.
Lex Craggs recorded four saves for the Saints while his counterpart Kenneth Perkinson tallied two saves for the Braves.
UNC Pembroke out-shot Flagler 11-6 and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. There were 32 fouls whistled with the Saints collecting 18 fouls.
Flagler plays host to the University of South Carolina Aiken on Monday (Oct. 6) at 6:30 p.m. at Saints Field in another key conference match.
