ST. AUGUSTINE –
Simeon Wickli's goal in the 80
th minute was nearly indescribable, other than maybe highlight worthy. Just outside the goal box with his back to the goal and falling down, he managed to kick his right leg up and connected with the ball and scored to help lead Flagler College to a 2-0 win over the University of North Georgia in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Saints Field on "Senior Day."
Flagler won its second consecutive match to improve to 7-8-1 overall and finished 4-5-0 in the Peach Belt. North Georgia suffered its fourth straight defeat and fell to 3-11-1 overall and 2-5-0 in conference play.
Eammon Moore won a 50-50 ball inside the 18-yard box and flicked the ball to Wickli who was already falling backwards. That broke the scoreless tie.
The Saints got an insurance goal nearly two minutes later when
Jean Vega booted in
Juan Membreno's corner kick.
Lex Craggs recorded his third shutout of the season as he tallied six saves for the Saints. Victor Ohlin also saved six shots for North Georgia and was helped by his defense with three team saves.
Flagler out-shot North Georgia 23-12 and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Flagler will play its regular season finale on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. against Eckerd College.
Before the match Flagler honored its four seniors:
Triston Hall,
Austin O'Connor,
Marco Padilla and
Jean Vega.
