MORROW, Ga. – Avery Shepard scored the game-winning goal in the 81
st minute to lead Clayton State University to a 4-2 win over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Quarterfinal Tuesday night at Laker Field.
Clayton State, the No. 4 seed, improved to 9-7-1 overall and Flagler, the No. 5 seed ended its season with a 7-9-1 record. Clayton State advances to the semifinal round on Friday (Nov. 7) and will meet top-seeded Young Harris College at 11 a.m., at Evans, Georgia.
Bilal Nakhil had two assists including on the game-winner. Nikola Garzibara also assisted on Shepard's goal.
Flagler's
Marco Padilla scored the first equalizer just 17 seconds after Clayton State scored the first goal of the match. He knocked the ball into the top left corner of the goal in the middle of scrum in front of the goal.
Jonny Cosgrove tied the game again in the 79
th minute, for the Saints, when he knocked in a rebound off of the goalkeeper's hands. That would be the last goal for the Saints.
Nick Punter tallied 11 saves for the Lakers while
Lex Craggs collected six for the Saints.
Flagler out-shot Clayton State 23-13, but the Lakers held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Thomas Gallitz was selected to the all-tournament team.
