Saints sweeps Lady Cougars and extend win streak

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Flagler College used an efficient offensive attack and the front line racked up seven total blocks in a 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 26-24) sweep of Columbus State University in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Friday night at the Lumpkin Center.

Flagler extended its winning streak to four matches to even its overall record at 12-12 and its Peach Belt record at 7-7. Columbus State had its three-match win streak snapped as it fell to 10-11 overall and 5-6 in conference play. The Saints won both matches in the series this year.

Flagler's Sara Davis and Genel Sturgeon each recorded 13 kills. Davis hit .423 as she had only two errors on 26 swings. Sturgeon was just as hot hitting .294 with three errors on 34 swings. Taja Valmyr recorded 10 kills, collected nine digs and tallied three block assists. Caitlyn Kovach paced the defense with a match-high 19 digs while Jailene Torres-Lopez recorded four total blocks. Amelia Morgan just missed a double-double with 36 assists and nine digs. She added thee block assists.

The Saints hit .219 with 44 kills and 16 errors on 128 swings.

The Lady Cougars used a balanced attack with Andrea Skipor leading the team with nine kills. Katie Poole, Megan Frame and Mary McCarty each recorded eight kills. Caytlin Merritt collected 16 digs while Ivana Kazic tallied 32 assists and nine digs.

The match was close throughout with 26 ties and nine lead changes.

The Saints ran off three consecutive points in the first set to erase a 10-all score. The Lady Cougars closed to within two points towards the end of the set, including an attack error on the first set point by the Saints to make the score 24-22. Sturgeon finished the set off with a kill.

In the second set, Columbus State took a 24-23 lead after a double-block by Kylie Beaubien and Kazic. However, a pair of kills by Davis followed by an attack error by McCarty gave the Saints the last three points to win the set.

Flagler had to rally in the third set, trailing 20-16 late. An attack error, kills by Davis and Valmyr and then finally a double-block by Morgan Davis tied the set at 20. Hooks followed with a service ace to give Flagler a 21-20 lead which forced a Columbus State timeout. Later, a kill by Davis gave Flagler match point at 24-22. A service error and an attack error by the Saints allowed the Lady Cougars to tie the score at 24, but Torres-Lopez and Morgan teamed on one more block before an attack error by Erika Gelzinyte of Columbus State ended the match.
