Flagler men rally to 3-1 win over Georgia Southwestern

VIDEO

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College played its first home match in nearly a month and enjoyed the home cooking as it rallied past a stubborn Georgia Southwestern State University side 3-1 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Wednesday night at Saints Field.

Flagler snapped its three-match losing streak, its longest such streak since the 2007 season, and improved to 4-3-1 overall and evened its Peach Belt record at 2-2-0. Georgia Southwestern dropped to 3-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.

Jean Vega scored the equalizer in the 43rd minute when he knocked in Marco Warren's through ball inside the left post.

Coming out of the locker room, Michael Amaya gave the Saints a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute when he beat the Hurricane keeper to the left after a nice pass from Eamonn Moore from the top of the 18-yard box.

Simeon Wickli gave Flager an insurance goal in the 60th minute when he headed in Jimmy Wear's throw-in from the right sideline.

Avery Alderman got the Hurricanes on the board first when he knocked in Jon-Luke Cannada's blocked shot in the 36th minute.

Lex Craggs stopped two shots for the Saints while Garrett Blamire tallied seven saves for the Hurricanes.

Flagler out-shot Georgia Southwestern 23-6 and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Flagler hosts the University of North Carolina Pembroke on Saturday (Oct. 4) at 7:30 p.m. at Saints Field in another crucial Peach Belt showdown. The last time these two teams met at Saints Field, Flagler came away with a 1-0 win which eliminated UNC Pembroke in the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament.
