Mack Hough's (St. Augustine, Fla./Pedro Menendez HS) goal in the 39th minute would prove to be enough as No. 22 (NSCAA Top 25) Flagler College edged No. 12 Clayton State University 1-0 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Saturday night at Laker Field.
Flagler improved to 6-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Peach Belt. Clayton State suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 7-1-0 overall and 1-1 in conference play. This is the third time this season Flagler has defeated a top 25 team (Sept. 3 at No. 2 Lees-McRae and Sept. 15 at No. 7 Wingate).
Hough received a pass inside the penalty box from
Johan Bergfeld (Akers Styckebruk, Sweden/Rekarnegymansiet) and then fired home the shot.
Matt Gilman (Ocala, Fla./Jacksonville U.) recorded his fifth shutout this season and tallied three saves for the Saints. Brian Garcia collected five saves for the Lakers.
Clayton State out-shot Flagler, 13-11, but the Saints had a slim 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Lakers were whistled for 17 fouls while the Saints were just reprimanded 13 times.
Flagler plays host to No. 17 Rollins College on Wednesday (Sept. 29) at 7 p.m. at Saints Field.
