ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Flagler College’s head men’s basketball coach Bo Clark announced that John Pietkiewicz (Winter Park, Fla./New Hampton School/Winter Park HS) has signed a letter of intent to attend Flagler and play basketball for the 2007-08 season.

“John is a great signee for us,” said Clark. “He has had several Division I opportunities and we feel fortunate to have John as part of our program.”

Pietkiewicz is a 6-4, 185-pound guard who has the ability to play either the point or shooting guard positions. This past year he attended the New Hampton (N.H.) School and helped lead the team to a 17-12 record in the challenging New England Prep School Athletic Conference. He was considered by the New England Basketball Services as one of New Hampshire’s top 30 basketball seniors.  Pietkiewicz averaged 8.0 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game for the Huskies. He also shot a team-high 40% from 3-point range. Pietkiewicz played for Head Coach Jamie Arsenault at New Hampton.

Pietkiewciz is better known in the Sunshine State for his time at Winter Park High. He helped lead the team to a 26-4 record as a senior and a Class 6A championship game appearance against Miami Norland. Pietkiewicz scored 24 points in the 6A semifinal against Vero Beach in a 53-46 win. He led the team in scoring, averaging 16.0 points per game. Pietkiewicz was a third-team all-Central Florida selection by the Orlando Sentinel and also earned honorable mention All-State honors. He played for Head Coach Matt Hixenbaugh.

Pietkiewicz’ father, Stan, was drafted by the San Diego Clippers in the seventh round of the 1978 NBA Draft. He played three seasons with the Clippers and played for the Dallas Mavericks in the 1980-81 season. After the NBA, Pietkiewicz played in Italy. He was an All-SEC player at Auburn University and scored 1,265 points and still holds the career free throw percentage record at Auburn at 83.4%.

Pietkiewicz joins Gilberto Clavell of Melbourne’s Florida Air Academy, D. J. Ferguson of Orlando’s Bishop Moore Catholic High School and Lyndon Merthie from St. Petersburg College in Coach Clark’s 2007 recruiting class.

Flagler College posted a 14-13 overall record in its first season of NCAA Division II provisional status. The Saints graduated three players off the 2006-07 roster.
