ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Former Flagler College baseball star Chris Barnwell received the news he has been waiting for his whole life – the call to the Major Leagues. Barnwell was playing shortstop for the Class AAA Nashville Sounds when he got the call to play for its parent club, the Milwaukee Brewers. He will be en route to Milwaukee on Tuesday. Barnwell becomes the first Flagler baseball player to reach the Major Leagues.

“I am speechless,” said Barnwell about his mid-season call up. “I am excited and happy.”

The Brewers are in the midst of its inter-league schedule hosting a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers (June 19-21) and then hit the road for a three-game set at Kansas City (June 23-25).

Barnwell was leading the Sounds with a .326 batting average which ranked No. 9 in the Pacific Coast League. He is also tied for 10th in the PCL with 16 doubles and has hitting streaks of 10, 11 and 12 games this season. Barnwell has helped lead the Sounds to a 39-31 record, good for first place in the PCL’s American North Division.

Last year, Barnwell helped lead Nashville to the PCL title.

Barnwell played four years with the Flagler College Saints and still holds several records. He was a 25th round draft choice of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2001 Draft.
