Coach Hugh Lewis begins his third year at the helm of Flagler's Lady Saints basketball team. After directing a 13-12 season his first year, the first winning season in 16 years, he and the returning players took the 1998-1999 Sun Conference Championship.
Lewis is the director of the Physical Education Department at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. His is also the track coach at F.S.D.B., and in 1990 he coached the team to a national championship and two former athletes to the World Games for the Deaf in Bulgaria. In the summer of 1995 he took 19 USA tracksters to Moscow to compete against Russian athletes.
Growing up in Indiana, Lewis was immersed in basketball at a very early age. He graduated from Ashland University in Ohio and later earned master's degrees from Smith College and from the University of North Florida. He originally came to St. Augustine to teach at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. For two years he worked at Flagler, serving as assistant director of Gallaudet University Regional Center. He also taught deaf children in Perth, Western Australia, for two years.
