J.L. Smith begins his seventh season as the assistant golf coach at Flagler.
Smith has an extensive background in golf. From 1974-2006, he was on the board of directors as well as a member of the Georgia State Golf Association and served as Junior Golf Chairman. He also coached golf at Southwood High School in Waycross, Ga., where he helped guide to the team to several state championships.
For the decade of the 1990’s he served as chairman of the Paul Azinger Camp for the Blind Pro-Am Charity Golf Tournament, which is a major pro-am stop on the PGA Tour following the TPC tournament.
In 1996, Smith turned professional after winning several amateur tournaments and has competed in many senior events.
Smith is active in the community lending his services to the YMCA, American Cancer Society, Salvation Army, Chamber of Commerce and Golf Course Management.
He is married to the former Debbie Self and they have three sons, who have been golf professionals, and six grandchildren.
