COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Flagler College women's soccer team battled No. 5 Columbus State University to a 1-1 draw in its Peach Belt Conference Opener Saturday afternoon.
"Today was a hard fought game," said head coach
Ashley Martin. "After going down a goal, the team showed resilience and persistence in getting back level.
Liz Hall's goal was a fantastic finish, and wonderful reward for a great individual performance, in which she hit the post twice in the first half. Once we equalized, the team kept pushing for a winner, but couldn't quite get the breakthrough."
The Cougars (3-1-1, 0-0-1) made it a 1-0 game in the first half on a penalty kick from Emma Beddow in the 27th minute. Keeper
Madison North judged Beddow's shot correctly, but dove short, allowing the ball to hit the bottom right corner of the net.
Flagler (1-1-2, 0-0-1) answered back in the 57th minute after
Josefine Nilsen fed
Liz Hall up the middle, allowing Hall to launch the ball from 15 yards out past Columbus State's goalkeeper, tying the game, 1-1.
The Saints put high pressure on the Cougars' defense, taking seven shots in the last 31 minutes of the match, but were unable to take the lead, finalizing the 1-1 score. Flagler had the advantage in shots (17-9) and shots on goal (5-3) while Columbus State had an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
North made two saves in the goal for the Saints, while Sara Halilhodzic made three stops for the Cougars in the final 45 minutes.
Flagler returns home for a mid-week game, Sept. 14 to host the University of South Carolina Aiken at 4 p.m. on Saints Field.
