ST. AUGUSTINE - The second-seeded Flagler College women's soccer team defeated the third-seeded University of North Georgia, 1-0, in the Peach Belt Conference Semifinals Saturday afternoon to advance to the Championship for the fourth straight year.
Â
"Today was a great battle between two solid teams. Our goal came from a moment of magic from Andrea, and a superb strike from Mikayla. The players battled in tough conditions and were pushed until the end, but they held strong until the final whistle."
Â
On a grey, dreary day in St. Augustine, the Saints and Nighthawks battled to keep possession, as neither team had many opportunities to attack.
Â
Flagler (12-3-2, 8-1-1) was finally able to execute on the offensive side in the 39th minute.
Andrea Fernandez poked the ball through two defenders, connecting with
Mikayla Lambert in the middle of the box. Lambert launched the ball over the keeper's head for her first career goal, giving the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Â
North Georgia (10-4-3, 6-2-2) came out hot in the second half, putting extreme pressure on Flagler's defensive end. The Nighthawks took four shots in the second half but were stopped by the Saint's defense and a save from
Madison North, finalizing Flagler's 1-0 victory.
Â
The Nighthawks had an 8-7 edge in shots, while the Saints had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Each team only had three shots on goal. North made three saves to secure her fifth shutout of the season for Flagler.
Â
The Saints are headed to their fourth straight PBC Championship, Saturday, Nov. 5. The location and time of the championship game will be determined after the other semifinal match between the first-seeded Columbus State University and fourth-seeded Lander University is completed tomorrow.
