Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Four Saints compete at ITA Southeast Regional

SUMTER, S.C. — The Flagler College men's tennis team continued its fall season this past weekend, competing in the ITA Southeast Regional at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

Head coach Jonas Piibor had four Saints travel north to participate in the annual tournament as Nikita Tatyanin, Cedric Holzmann, Philipp Lemken and Oscar Del Granado all competed in both singles and doubles. The tournament saw Tatyanin make it all the way to the singles' quarterfinals, losing to the eventual champion, while the duo of Lemken and Del Granado represented the Saints in the doubles' quarters.

"I thought we did things well but at the same time we need to execute better when we have the opportunities in our matches," Piibor said. "My main focus now is to increase our physical and mental toughness throughout the team. We have a large roster, and I am looking to see who are going to step it up and embrace the challenge moving forward."

The first round saw two Saints, Tatyanin who earned the sixth seed, and Del Granado, who came into the tournament seeded ninth, both earn byes into the round of 64. Holzmann opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Lincoln Memorial University's Fabian Sjokvist.

In the round of 64, both Tatyanin and Del Granado had no trouble with their opponents. Tatyanin advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Daniel Ostap of the University of North Georgia, while Del Granado defeated Anderson University's Juan Sengariz, 6-1, 6-3. Holzmann would then fall to Gabriel Constantino of Wingate University, 6-2, 6-4.

Flagler continued to find success in the round of 32 behind Tatyanin's third consecutive win, with this one coming versus Marc Janse of Carson Newman University, 6-2, 6-3. Del Grando then defeated Peach Belt Conference opponent Hugo Regner of Lander University seamlessly, 6-3, 6-1.

In the round of 16, Tatyanin faced off against PBC foe Pietro Martinetti of Columbus State — whom the Saint had no problem getting past — coming away with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. He would then take the court for his quarterfinal match against Martinetti's teammate Alvaro Regalado, who concluded last year's campaign ranked No. 2 in the nation individually. Regalado would bring Tatyanin's run to an end, 6-3, 6-3, before going on to win the singles' championship

In doubles play, Lemken and Del Grando earned a bye into the round of 32, while the duo of Tatyanin and Holzman opened the round of 64 with an 8-6 victory over a team from Barton College, Diego Agudelo and Kristoffer Staahlbrand.

Lemken and Del Grando won their first doubles match of the tournament with an 8-2 victory over Lander's Alexandre Crepy and Thomas Del Negri, while the other Flagler duo suffered an early exit versus Belmont Abby's Andres Golindano and Nelson Stafford, 9-7. The quarterfinals saw Flagler defeat the team from North Georgia, 8-6, before falling to Columbus State's Martinetti and Tommaso Schold by a final score of 8-3.

Flagler gets a break from match play before returning to action when they travel to compete in the Saint Leo Hidden Duels, beginning Friday, Oct. 29 in Saint Leo, Fla.
