ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The Flagler College softball team started its Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against No. 9-ranked Young Harris College on a high note, defeating the visiting Mountain Lions 3-1 before splitting the twin bill with a night cap, 14-0, loss Tuesday afternoon at Flagler Field
The Saints move to 15-17 overall and 8-8 in conference play ahead of a pair of doubleheaders this upcoming weekend to cap the regular season. Flagler will face Georgia College for a noon doubleheader Saturday, May 1, and then will host Georgia Southwestern University for Senior Day Sunday, May 2 at 2 p.m.
In the thrilling game one victory,
Kyra Gipson (W, 13-5) tossed the complete game, allowing one run — a solo home run to Morgan Curley in the second inning — on five hits while striking out seven. The Saints took the lead first and never lost it. Even when the Mountain Lions (30-6, 17-3 PBC) knotted it in the second frame, Flagler took it right back. The lead begun in the first inning for the Saints when
Morgan Murphy smacked an infield single to the shortstop, bringing the speedy
NaJah Gerrald home as she beat out the throw to put the Saints up.
With it knotted at 1-all and two outs in the second frame, it was
Mercedes Salinas' two-run RBI single that proved to be the runs Flagler needed to go on top for good. With two outs, Gerrald drew a walk, and then
Bella Munoz singled and advanced on the throw to set up Salinas' shot into right field that brought the winning run and an insurance one home in the last frame Sara King (L, 7-3) would toss. Leading the Saints in hits was MacKenzie Smith with a pair, while Gerrald, Munoz, Murphy, and
Kyleigh Taylor all had one apiece.
In the second game, Gipson (L, 13-6) started again but it didn't go as planned as she was pulled in the fourth inning and allowed four runs on six hits. From there, it spiraled for the Saints as 10 more runs crossed and a total of four errors added up. Offensively, Flagler was only able to connect on three hits against pitcher Jill Dixon (W, 11-1) as
Zoe Mooney, Smith and Taylor were responsible for those.
