PEMBROKE, N.C. — The quick turnaround Sunday didn't fare the Flagler College softball team well as the Saints dropped the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at UNC Pembroke, 3-2 and 10-1, after splitting at Francis Marion University the day before.
Flagler (11-15, 5-8 PBC) will have a day off Monday before hitting the ground running with two home doubleheaders this upcoming week, beginning with West Florida at noon Thursday. The Saints will continue PBC play versus Young Harris Sunday with the same start time.
In the first game Sunday,
Kyra Gipson (L, 9-5) tossed the complete game for the second straight day as she allowed three runs on six hits while striking out three on 99 pitches.
Bella Munoz and
Alyssa Velez were the Saints who plated runs as Munoz scored Velez in the third inning for the 1-run lead, but then UNCP (17-7, 5-1) knotted the score in the fourth on a homer and took the lead for good in the next frame via a pair of RBI-singles. Velez smacked another extra-base hit in the seventh when she homered to center field, pairing it with her triple, to give Flagler some life, down one run with zero outs; however, the first baseman's fifth dinger was the last run the Saints would see. Alongside Munoz and Velez,
Alexis Ridgell was the only other Saint to record a hit versus starter Raygan Larson (W, 9-1).
In the second game, the Saints took the early lead via a
Morgan Murphy RBI-double, scoring Munoz in the top of the third, but it was the only run the visiting team was able to plate in the five-inning finisher.
Sidney Mathis got the nod in the circle, tossing a no-hitter going into the third inning after Flagler took the lead, but six walks doomed the senior as one scored the game-tying run.
Madelyn Wise (L, 2-6) relieved her following that with the bases loaded, but it was a tough hole to get out of as four more runs scored after that.
The Saints saw two of their seven hits come following the five-run inning — via a
Paige Maseda double and Munoz single in the fourth – but nothing stuck to rally back from the deficit against starter Lauren Gammons (W, 3-2). In the fifth inning,
Taylor Scott entered to give the Braves another look; however, more walks hurt the Saints as did an error that led to the home team hitting a walk-off home run for its second five-frame splash.
