Softball drops pitchers’ duel to No. 1 North Georgia

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The Flagler College softball team dropped a tough Peach Belt Conference doubleheader to the top-ranked Nighthawks Monday afternoon as the University of North Georgia edged the Saints in game one, 2-0, before using a five-run fifth inning to take game two, 8-0.

Flagler (8-10, 2-2 PBC) had a quiet day at the plate as the Saints were only able to get one hit versus Kylee Smith (W, 4-0) in the first seven innings followed by five in the second game against hurler Laken Chambers (W, 5-0). Flagler's starters Kyra Gipson and Madelyn Wise each tossed a complete game and kept the Nighthawks (14-0, 2-0) honest to give the Saints a chance.

In the sixth inning of game one, Flagler had its best chance to knot the game at 2-all. NaJah Gerrald reached on a lead-off walk and Valerie Beltre had the team's lone hit to put two on with zero outs, but the next three Saints went down in order to end Flagler's best chance to get on the board. Gipson (L, 7-3) allowed a pair of runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts.

In game two, the Saints saw their first hit come sooner as Mercedes Salinas smacked across a hit in the third, but like the next four hits to come, the Saints weren't able to string them together for a rally. Wise kept eggs on the scoreboard until the fourth inning when the Nighthawks plated a pair of runs, and then in the fifth, North Georgia spotted five runs on five hits and a pair of errors.

The Nighthawks plated another run in the seventh inning, but of the eight runs scored, only three were earned for Wise as she struck out six and allowed 11 hits. Along with Salinas, Gerrald, Beltre, Kyleigh Taylor and McKenzie Smith had hits.

Up Next: The Saints now hit the road again for a doubleheader at Columbus State University Saturday, March 27, beginning at 1 p.m.
