AUGUSTA, Ga. – After a
Myles Colangelo two-run single in the top of the ninth tied the game, a possible double play ball to end the 11
th inning could not be completed and Augusta University plated the game-winning run in an 8-7 victory over Flagler College Friday night at SRP Park.
Augusta evens its record at 1-1 and tonight's game was its Peach Belt Conference opener. Flagler is now 0-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Things looked good for the Saints early as
Jaiden Warde belted a grand slam in the top of the second to start the scoring.
The Jaguars answered with single runs in the second and fifth innings, to go along with two runs in the third, and a three-run fourth to take a 7-4 lead.
In the top of the ninth, Augusta brought in Jasper Dubberly to close the game out. He struck out the first batter, but then hit
Matthew Burke.
Chase Carney drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate. Two batters later,
Sam Freedman was issued a free pass to load the bases with two outs. Dubberly threw a wild pitch, which scored Burke from third. Colangelo then hit a single into left field to score the other two runs to tie the game.
Neither team could get much going until the home half of the 11
th inning. The Saints brought in
Ryan Ayrey (0-1) to keep the game tied. Mason Robertson got his first hit of the night, and then took second on a sacrifice bunt. An intentional walk was issued to keep a double play alive. Lukas Coker worked a walk to load the bases. Trent Maddox hit a 2-0 pitch to Flagler second baseman
Alex Amos, who tagged the runner in front of him, but the throw to first to complete the double play was wide of the bag an Robertson crossed home plate.
Chase Horton (1-0) shut down Flagler in the final 2 1/3 innings he worked. He struck out four and did not allow a hit or a run.
Maddox went 2-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored, and three runs batted in.
Ayrey tossed two-thirds of an inning, allowed one hit, one run, and walked two batters to get the loss.
Nathan Henderson,
Zach Audet, and
Gage Voorhees all pitched tonight. The Saints pitching staff had 12 strikeouts tonight, but also 12 walks.
Burke collected three singles and scored a run for the Saints. Freedman and
Ashton Thomas each had two singles and scored a run.
The same two teams meet tomorrow at noon in a doubleheader.
