NEWBERRY, S.C. — It wasn't the ending the Flagler College softball team had hoped for after a thrilling start to its Carolinas trip the night before.
On Sunday, the Saints fell to Newberry College in a doubleheader, 9-2 and 6-0, to complete a four-game, two-day weekend that wrapped up in Newberry, South Carolina.
In the first game, Flagler (5-4) plated a pair of runs first — one in the first and another in the third — via the bat of
Kyleigh Taylor as she had an RBI single followed by a solo home run for her third of the season.
The Saints and
Kyra Gipson (L, 4-1) were rolling into the fifth inning; however, Newberry (5-1) spotted a four-run fifth inning and six more in the next to take game one.
Taylor Scott relieved Gipson in the sixth with one out and faced six batters.
Bella Munoz and
NaJah Gerrald joined Taylor with two hits as
Valerie Beltre scored on Taylor's RBI and Munoz had the team's lone walk.
Mackenzie Smith and
Alyssa Velez completed Flagler's eight hits, with just one coming against reliever Kasey Widmyer (W, 2-1) who entered in the fifth to quiet the Saints' bats. Flagler left eight on base.
In the second game, Flagler was unable to muster much offense after its biggest threat in the first inning came with two outs and the bases loaded. The Saints saw both of its walks — Munoz and Smith — and one of its two hits — this one from
Morgan Murphy — come in the opening frame.
After that, only Beltre was able to make contact and give Flagler some offensive hope versus pitcher Alexandrea Sullivan (W, 3-0). In the circle,
Madelyn Wise (L, 1-2) allowed a pair of runs in the second before
Mallorie Sykes made her Flagler debut in relief. The freshman kept the scoreboard clean, except in the fourth inning when she allowed four runs on two hits; however, she did strikeout seven and walked only one.
Up Next: The Saints will be back in action when Auburn-Montgomery comes to St. Augustine for a doubleheader Monday, March 1 at noon.
