Flagler downs Valdosta State in four

ST. AUGUSTINE – Rachel Machovec equaled her career-high with 17 kills to help lead Flagler College to a 3-1 (16-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19) win over Valdosta State University in a non-conference volleyball match Friday night at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler defeated Valdosta State for the second time in four days to raise its record to 2-0. Valdosta State slipped to 0-2.

"It was great to be back on the Flagler Gym hardwood and feel the energy of our fans," said head coach Matt Affolder. "We talked for the last two weeks about this unusual spring season and the unique back-to-back same opponent matches. Valdosta State came out strong, using a different system, and it took some time for us to get into offensive rhythm and win the server vs. passer battles. It was a great team effort as the synergy between the court and the bench was a big factor, and everyone had moments where they had to pick us up."

Logan Garcia added 10 kills and hit a career-best .769 as she had 13 errorless swings. Kennedy Muff tallied 38 assists and just finished one kill shy of a double-double. Rebekah Machovec finished with seven kills, five digs, three aces, and three total blocks. Victoria Bowrosen came off the bench to tie her career-high with eight kills and hit .353. Karolina Garstka collected a team-high 10 digs.

"I thought Tori managed the game very well attacking smartly and aggressively, and we saw a physical offensive side of Kennedy that scored some huge momentum points," said Affolder. "The connection between Logan and Kennedy was really clicking tonight, and once we got past the slow start in the first set, our entire lineup of servers really put some pressure on their passers which made the difference in the match."

Jessie Mooney led the Blazers with 13 kills, seven digs, and three total blocks. Grace Dougherty added 10 kills and hit .412. Tammy Reyes-Perez tallied 38 assists while Olivia Piazza collected 12 digs.

Valdosta State came out red-hot hitting .583 in the first set and was led by Mooney's four kills.

The second set featured seven ties, but only one lead change. The Blazers tied the set at 21, but the Saints answered with kills by Muff and Rebekah Machovec. Garcia hit .800 in the set for Flagler with four kills on five errorless swings.

A quick 3-0 spurt gave Flagler a 7-4 lead and the never trailed the rest of the third set. The Saints defense limited the Blazers to a -.029 hitting percentage.

Flagler used a 6-0 run to gain a 14-8 lead. Muff hit a perfect 1.000 as she had five kills on five swings and added 11 assists.

Up next for Flagler is national power, University of Tampa, on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
