ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — In the two previous doubleheaders, the Flagler College softball team struggled to get a game one victory in its pocket.
That wasn't the case Sunday.
The Saints used a pair of high-scoring innings and pitching performances as Flagler pulled out the game one, 5-2, victory before using an 8-2 win in the finisher of the twin bill to sweep visiting the Queens University of Charlotte at Flagler Field.
In game one, Queens (10-11) took the 2-1 lead with a two-run third inning, but that lead didn't last very long and it would be the last one the Royals would see the rest of the day.
Kyleigh Taylor started the four-run fourth inning with a single, and
Genevieve Mangini finished it with a two-run blast to left field. Joining Mangini and Taylor with hits — for a team-total five to defeat Courtney Pearson (L, 4-7) in the circle — was
Maria Kappos,
Morgan Murphy and
Alyssa Velez as Murphy and Velez each had an RBI paired with Manginis for four total.
The Royals attempted to use a seventh-inning rally, but the Saint defense backed
Kyra Gipson (W, 9-3) as the senior tossed the complete game and allowed just two runs on nine hits.
In the second game,
Madelyn Wise (W, 5-2) followed suit of her mentor in the circle. The freshman's lone blemish was a two-run home run in the fifth inning, but at that point, the Saints already had a five-run cushion for her that all came in the third frame. Wise, who held a no-hitter through four innings, allowed just those two runs on three hits while striking out 12.
It was the third inning that the Saints used to get on top of Queens as they scored five runs on five hits to end the day for Shannon McGuire (L, 5-4). The pitching change only helped for two innings before
Morgan Murphy belted a three-run home run in the fifth inning after the Royals used one to get back into it.
Murphy's homer put her on four in the second game and five for the day for a team-high 17 so far this season. Her sister,
Natalie Murphy,
Paige Maseda and
Kyleigh Taylor also had an RBI, while Natalie joined Morgan with a team-high two hits apiece as
NaJah Gerrald, Maseda and
Brittney Rayfield each recorded a hit.
Next Up: Flagler (13-6) will adventure to Daytona, Florida, for a Friday Night Lights doubleheader versus Hillsdale, beginning at 5 p.m.
