ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College seniors
Phil Bruce,
Jeffercy Jean, and
Vaughn McCall concluded their playing careers Saturday afternoon with a 90-51 loss to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game at Flagler Gymnasium.
UNC Pembroke finished the regular season with a 20-8 overall record and a 15-7 mark in the Peach Belt. The Braves will be the No. 4 seed in next week's conference tournament. Flagler finished the season with an 8-20 overall record and a 5-17 mark in league play.
McCall finished his career with the second-most points scored in program history. His 10 points today gave him a total of 1,708 points. McCall played in 108 career games, the most of any Flagler player in the NCAA Division II era.
Jean finished with 919 points and 528 rebounds in his four-year career. Today, he scored a team-high 11 points with the help of making three 3-pointers.
Bruce made his third start in his brief two-year career and grabbed five rebounds.
All three seniors were honored before the contest.
After a
Logan Swackhammer cut the Flagler deficit to four (22-18), UNC Pembroke countered with a 14-0 spurt and finished the first half on a 22-2 run to take a 44-20 lead into the half. The Saints were held to one field goal in the last seven-plus minutes of the opening half.
James Murray-Broyles led all scorers with 19 points. He sank five 3-pointers for the Braves. Akia Pruitt recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. David Strother chipped in with 11 points and Carson Mounce came off the bench to provide 10 points.
UNCP forced 22 Flagler turnovers and converted those into 24 points. The Braves out-rebounded the Saints 52-37.
Swackhammer added 10 points for the Saints.
Gedi Juozapaitis tacked on eight points and 10 rebounds.
