ST. AUGUSTINE –
Aaron Anderson and
Justin Neo belted solo home runs, but a late rally by Flagler College came up short in a 10-6 loss to Florida Southern College in a non-conference baseball game on a cool and blustery Tuesday night at Drysdale Field.
Florida Southern improved to 15-10 overall while Flagler fell to 15-14.
The Saints trailed 10-5 going into the bottom of the ninth when the sixth Moccasin pitcher, Brandon Harris, retired the first two batters. He walked the next three batters to load the bases and
Frankie Martello hit a slow roller to Florida Southern third baseman Zach Scott. By the time Scott got to the ball, everyone was safe and the Saints trailed 10-6.
Mocs closer Leo Rodriguez was called on to get the final out. He got
Elliott Schubert to ground out to the shortstop, who then flipped the ball to the second baseman for the force out. It was the sixth save of the season for Rodriguez.
The score was tied at 3-all through three innings complete. Flagler reliever
Luke Cooksey (0-1) retired the first hitter in the fourth, but surrendered back-to-back solo home runs to Isaiah Cullum and Austin Huber, which gave Florida Southern a 5-3 lead.
Alec Hammond (2-0), the second of seven Florida Southern pitchers used, earned the win after allowing two runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out three batters and walked two.
Jacob Teter went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and five runs batted in. Scott added a two-run home run in the seventh. Zach Diewert collected two singles and scored two runs.
Cooksey allowed five runs on five hits in two innings of work for the Saints. He struck out five batters. Flagler also used seven pitchers.
Steven DiPuglia finished with two singles and two RBI.
Austin Davis also hit two singles and he drove in a run.
Jason Moore picked up two singles and scored a run.
Flagler hosts a three-game Peach Belt Conference series against Young Harris College, starting Saturday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
