DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Kirstin Reynolds hit a two-out, two-run triple to right-center to send No. 3 seed Columbus State University to the semifinal round with a 6-5 win over No. 6 seed Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal game Friday afternoon at Haines and Carolyn Hill Stadium.
Columbus State snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 32-18. The Lady Cougars will face the No. 2 seed Georgia College tomorrow at 10 a.m. Flagler's season ends with a 26-27 record.
The Saints broke up a 4-all tie in the seventh when pinch runner
Kailey Perry scored from second thanks to a fielding error by Columbus State left fielder Keeli Waugh, who had trouble finding the grasp on
Tatum Morgan's single to left.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kia Smith led off the inning with a single up the middle. She was sacrificed over, but the PBC Player of the Year Elizabeth Perdue flied out to deep centerfield. Calli Star drew a four-pitch walk, and Reynolds ripped a 2-1 pitch into the right-center gap past a diving
Garland Evans in centerfield and both runners scored to end the game.
Helen Snavely (3-3) got the win in the circle for the Lady Cougars. She tossed two-thirds of an inning in relief, allowed one hit and struck out a batter. Darby Demarest started and tossed one and one-third of an inning while Peyton Sorrells tossed the other five innings.
Smith collected two singles and scored two runs for Columbus State. Mary Horne hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to tie the game at 4-all.
Katlyn McCue (16-14) took the loss in relief. She allowed four runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings. McCue walked six and struck out two.
Ally Marcano pitched the first inning and allowed two runs on two hits.
Evans and
Morgan Murphy each finished with two singles.
Rachel Hudson hit a bases clearing double to left-center in the second inning to give the Saints a 3-2 lead.
Maria Kappos led off the fourth with a double and scored on Hudson's single up the middle.
