ST. AUGUSTINE – Conner Durden broke up a 1-all tie in the third inning with a two-run home to give the University of South Carolina Aiken a lead it would not relinquish in an 8-3 win over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.
USC Aiken won its fourth game in a row to improve to 30-16 overall and 21-7 in the Peach Belt. Flagler had its six-game home winning streak snapped and fell to 29-19 overall and 15-13 in conference play.
The Saints struck first on
Frankie Martello's RBI single in the first inning.
The Pacers finally broke through in the third. Daulton Weeks hit a one-out single and then stole second base. He scored on Brian Parreira's single. Two batters later was when Durden put USC Aiken ahead for good with the two-run homer.
The Pacers added a single run in the fourth and four more in the seventh to pull away.
Flagler added a single run in the fifth on
Dillon Reed's single and then added another in the ninth on
Kenneth Gordon's fielder's choice.
Mitch Spence (6-3) kept Flagler hitters off balance as he scattered seven hits over seven innings of work to record the win. He struck out eight batters.
Durden finished the game 2-for-5 with the home run, three runs batted in and he scored two runs. Jose Bonilla went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
Jett Walsh (7-2), making his first weekend start, tossed 6 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits. He walked five and had two wild pitches.
Ethan Crout collected two singles and scored a run. Martello added a pair of base hits and drove in a run while
Ja'Kobi Dasher singled twice.
The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
