LAKELAND, Fla. – Cody Burgess' three-run home run in the fourth inning gave No. 3 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Florida Southern College enough insurance to earn an 8-2 victory over No. 11 Flagler College in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday night at Henley Field.
Florida Southern improves to 22-2-1 overall while Flagler falls to 23-5.
The Moccasins took the lead for good as they broke open a 1-all game with a two-run third inning. Burgess led off with a walk and took third when
Trey Frazier's (0-1) pickoff attempt at first base was wild. He scored on Pablo Cabrera's base hit to give the Mocs a 2-1 lead. A wild pitch and a fly out moved Cabrera to third and he scored on a ground out.
After the Saints got a run back in the top of the fourth, Christian Maglich led off the home-half of the inning with a walk. Jacob Teter reached on Frazier's second error. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third and two batters later, Burgess hit a home run to center field off reliever
Kyle Hansen.
The Mocs added two more runs in the eighth.
Burgess finished 3-for-4 with a double, home run, three runs batted in, four runs scored and two stolen bases. Logan Browning went 3-for-5 with a double while Maglich collected two singles and scored a run.
Matt Martin (3-1) scattered four hits and allowed one earned run in five innings pitched. JT Hintzen and Leo Rodriguez pitched in relief.
Sean Lawlor belted a solo home run in the second inning for Flagler. He scored the Saints other run as he led off the fourth by reaching on an error by the left fielder and later scored on a
Connor Laspina single.
Frazier surrendered four hits and three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings pitched. Hansen and
Aaron Simple came out of the bullpen.
Ethan Crout collected a pair of singles along with Laspina.
Flagler heads north to Young Harris College for a three-game Peach Belt Conference weekend series.
