SAINT LEO, Fla. – No. 10 (NFCA Division II Top 25) Saint Leo University swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Flagler College on Tuesday at the University Softball Field. Saint Leo won the opener in 10 innings, 4-3, and then took game two 11-3, in six innings.
The Lions won their fifth straight and improved to 14-3. Flagler dropped to 10-7.
In the opener, the Lions scored a run in the fourth inning on a double by Kacie Kelly to tie the game at 3-all and that's how it stood until the bottom of the 10
th.
Kelly led off the 10
th inning with a walk and was sacrificed over to second base. Bethany Kursch followed with a single to center to put runners on the corners. Two batters later, Maddy Lynn drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Bailey McKenna singled through the left side of the infield to end the game.
Auria Mounts (5-3) scattered six hits and allowed three runs to earn the win for the Lions. She struck out seven batters and only allowed four base runners in the last seven innings.
Kunsch finished 2-for-5 with a double and two runs batted in. Ashley Morris collected two singles and scored two runs while Kelly went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and one driven in.
Flagler took a 3-2 lead in the third inning when
Tatum Morgan cleared the bases with a double.
Katlyn McCue (6-4) took the loss for the Saints. She allowed eight hits and three earned runs .McCue walked five and struck out two. She allowed just four base runners in the final 6 2/3 innings.
Morgan went 2-for-4 with the double and three RBI.
In the second game, Saint Leo scored five runs in the first two innings en route to the win.
Shyanne DuBois reached on an error and two runs scored on the play in the first inning. She later scored on an infield hit by Sarah Pauscher.
Sarah Neuman (2-0) tossed 4 1/3 innings, allowed five hits and three runs to pick up the win. Alison Mitts closed the game to record her second save.
Kelly collected a pair of singles and scored two runs. Pauscher finished with two hits, scored a run and drove in another. Amexis Miniet also had two singles, scored two runs and knocked in two more.
Ally Marcano (4-3) tossed 5 1/3 innings and surrendered eight hits and nine earned runs.
Morgan hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning for the Saints.
Morgan Murphy collected a pair of singles.
Flagler will head north to play in the Captain D's Classic at Dahlonega, Georgia. The Saints will face Coker College on Saturday (March 3) at 10 a.m. and then take on Tusculum College at 2 p.m.
