DAHLONEGA, Ga. –
Damerit Brown led five Flagler College players in double figures with a team-high 17 points in a 95-84 win over the University of North Georgia in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Monday afternoon at the UNG Convocation Center.
Flagler improved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt. It's the first time the Saints have started the conference season with two wins since joining the league for the 2009-10 season. North Georgia dropped to 5-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The Saints scorched the nets in the second half as they shot 64.5 percent (20-31). Flagler used a massive 24-3 run midway through the second half to break open a 62-all tie.
The Nighthawks were able to trim the deficit to as few as eight points with 15 seconds to go.
Flagler finished with season-highs in field goal percentage (.551), 3-pointers made (14), 3-point field goal percentage (.467), and steals (9). The Saints grabbed 10 offensive rebounds, which led to 18 second chance points.
"I was proud of our effort and energy today, but we were fortunate to make shots," said head coach
Chad Warner. "Road wins are tough to come by and we will have to be great Wednesday to have a chance at another one."
DeMari Davis scored a season-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. He was an efficient 6-for-10 from the field.
Vaughn McCall added 16 points with the help of four made 3-pointers.
Logan Swackhammer contributed a season-high 14 points.
Gedi Juozapaitis recorded his second-consecutive double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. He also led the team with three steals.
Zezmon Steeple led the Nighthawks with a game-high 24 points. He drained five treys. Shawn Hopkins added 16 points while Ephraim Tshimanga tacked on 14 points, six rebounds, and four steals.
North Georgia was held to 36.4 percent (12-33) shooting in the first half and trailed 46-38 at the break.
Flagler concludes its trip to the mountains on Wednesday against Young Harris College at 3:30 p.m.
