MORROW, Ga. –
Tryggvi Magnusson's early second half goal provided enough insurance for Flagler College to hold off Clayton State University 2-1 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Laker Field.
Flagler improved to 3-6-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Peach Belt. Clayton State drops to 2-6-2 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play.
"This was a very good result on the road for our team," said head coach
Chris Kranjc. "We played well to earn the victory through very adverse conditions."
The Saints took a 1-0 lead into the half. In the 67
th minute,
Kyle Doherty intercepted a clearing attempt by a Clayton State player and sent a cross pass into the box where Magnusson drove the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.
Flagler would need that goal as Clayton State scored in the 75
th minute when Brad Kay scored an unassisted goal.
Oscar Davidsson scored the first goal of the match in the 23
rd minute off a
Cameron Silbar pass.
Iwan Roberts recorded five saves for the Saints while Kari Puustinen collected six saves for the Lakers.
Flagler out-shot Clayton State 19-13 and held an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Lakers had three corner kicks while the Saints had two. Clayton State led in fouls with 11 and Flagler was reprimanded nine times.
Flagler steps out of conference on Wednesday (Oct. 10) and will face Saint Leo University at 6 p.m. at Saints Field.
