Crimson & Gold Banquet and President’s Golf Classic raises funds for Flagler Athletics

ST. AUGUSTINE – Legendary Florida State University football coach Bobby Bowden was the keynote speaker last Thursday night (Oct. 11) at the sixth annual Crimson & Gold Banquet at Flagler College's elegant dining hall, and more funds were raised at the President's Golf Classic held at TPC Sawgrass Dye's Valley course on Friday (Oct. 12). In total, approximately $125,000 was raised to support Flagler Athletics.

"Coach Bowden was truly amazing at our Crimson & Gold Banquet," said Jud Damon, director of athletics. "It was an honor to have him come and speak to the Flagler faithful. Needless to say, he played a large part in making this year's event, combined with the President's Golf Classic, our most successful ever. Joey Wiles (Sr. Associate Director of Athletics) and Stephanie Burgess (Director of College Relations) provided great leadership, and a lot of hard work behind the scenes, to ensure our success as well. We are incredibly grateful for the wonderful support that we received from our community for the Flagler College student-athletes."

Bowden was the head coach for 34 years at Florida State. He coached the Seminoles to a pair of national titles (1993 and 1999) as well as 12 Atlantic Coast Conference titles (1992-2000, 2002-03 and 2005). Bowden was selected as the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year in 1980 and was the Walter Camp Coach of the Year Award recipient in 1991. In 1992, he received the United States Sports Academy's Amos Alonzo Stagg Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a coach.

The President's Golf Classic saw beautiful weather at TPC Sawgrass. The Abare Cup was up for grabs with many foursomes competing for the valued trophy. This year's winner was the Dick Keller foursome of Santiago Cavanagh, Natalia Azcue, Gabriel Bell, and Mark Cox.

The Department of Athletics would like to thank Flagler College, the countless people it took to put together and run the Crimson & Gold Banquet, as well as everyone at TPC Sawgrass for another great President's Golf Classic.
