FLORENCE, S.C. – Little used pitcher River Ryan (2-0) tossed a complete game four-hit shutout as No. 28 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) University of North Carolina at Pembroke eliminated Flagler College from the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, 5-0, Saturday afternoon at Sparrow Stadium.
UNC Pembroke improved to 40-14 overall and it advances to the PBC Tournament final at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon against Georgia College with the league's automatic berth on the line. Flagler concludes its season with a 31-24 record.
Ryan came into the game with a total of 10 1/3 innings pitched in eight appearances this season. He tossed 115 pitches with 82 of those being strikes. Ryan fanned seven and walked just one batter. He retired 11 batters on fly outs and another eight on ground outs. Ryan retired the last 16-of-18 batters he faced and he retired all nine of Flagler's lead-off hitters.
He received all of the offense he needed in the second inning. With runners at first and second and nobody out, Stibel Aleman Saba hit a single which drove home Nick Debo from second base. Three batters later, Alex Simpson drove in another run with a base hit to right.
The Braves added another run in the third and two more in the seventh for insurance.
Jarrett Mobley collected two singles, scored a run and drove in another while Saba finished with two singles and one run batted in.
Jordan Doyle (0-1), making his second start of the season, took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in one-plus innings of work.

Michael Maiocco (3 2/3),
Ryan Ashworth (1/3) and
Louis Pugliese (1) all saw time in relief.
Cole Ondrejka, who was selected to the all-tournament team, collected two singles for the Saints. He hit .611 (11-for-18) for the tournament.
Jason Moore and
Jake Hathaway had the other base hits for Flagler.
