Saints bats come alive in sweep of Jaguars

ST. AUGUSTINE – Senior Katelynn Smith fired a two-hit shutout during Flagler College's 7-0 win over Augusta University on "Senior Day" during Saturday's final Peach Belt Conference doubleheader of the regular season. Flagler outslugged Augusta, 12-8, in the second game.
 
The Saints finished the regular season with a 35-18 overall mark and an 18-6 record in the Peach Belt. The 18 conference wins is a program record. The Jaguars dropped their overall record to 9-41 and 4-18 in conference play.
 
During the early game, Smith (8-7) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. She retired the first two batters, but Kelsea Hunter recorded the first hit of the game for Augusta with a single to center field. Smith earned the win and surrendered just two hits. She walked two and struck out three.
 
The Saints plated five runs on six hits through the first two innings. During Flagler's first time at bat, Mackenzie Conley and Maddy Murphy each drove in a run on a single. Garland Evans sent a triple down the left field line to send Maddy Murphy home.
 
Alli-Ann Bigale blasted a two-run home run to left field in the second inning.
 
Bigale and Evans each tallied three hits and two RBI to account for half the Saints' offense. Maddy Murphy went 2-for-3 and drove a run in.
 
Morgan Hunter (4-17) suffered the loss for the Jags. Hunter gave up seven runs on nine hits through 4.1 innings.
 
Augusta opened the second game with two runs in the first inning and added another two in the third, but the Saints answered by scoring in each of the first three innings. Erin Rozier smacked a run-scoring double into right field in the first and belted a two-run shot in the third for the Jags.
 
Natalie Murphy's two-run double got the scoring started for Flagler in the first. The Saints scored four times in the second on four singles with RBI singles from Bigale, Natalie Murphy and Maddy Murphy. Kappos blasted a two-run homer to center in the third inning to give the Saints' an 8-4 advantage.
 
Marni Greenstein helped the Jags pull within one run of the Saints, 8-7, with a three-run home run to left field in the fourth inning. But, Flagler put the game away with a four-run fifth. Bigale sent a two-run single into left field and Morgan Murphy picked up an RBI on a single.
 
Natalie Murphy went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs. Woodard and Bigale each collected three hits and scored a combined five runs. Bigale also picked up three RBI.
 
Greenstein and Rozier each drove in three runs for the Jags and combined to score five runs.
 
Callie Reed (5-4) allowed seven runs on nine hits through four innings and earned the win. She did not issue a walk and fanned three batters. Ally Marcano locked down her second save of the season by holding Augusta to one run over three innings. She surrendered just one hit and struck out two.
 
Kristen Mills (3-19) took the loss for Augusta. She gave up eight runs on nine hits through 2.1 innings. 
 
Flagler will open the 2017 Peach Belt Conference Tournament next weekend in Milledgeville, Georgia.
