ST. AUGUSTINE – With the wind blowing in most of the night at Drysdale Field, scoring runs proved to be difficult. That was the case as No. 19 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Florida Southern College defeated No. 23 Flagler College 1-0 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night.
Florida Southern extended its winning streak to 14 games and improved to 22-6 overall. Flagler fell to 21-12.
The only run of the game came in the first inning. Cody Burgess led off the game with a sharp grounder up the middle off Flagler starter
Ryan Ashworth (1-3). Two batters later, Mitch Reeves worked a walk, Ashworth's first free pass issued this season. After a fly out, Omar Villaman singled sharply to right field and Burgess scored from second base.
That would be all of the offense Tyler Knowles (1-1) would need. He retired 15 of the 17 batters he faced in five innings of work. He walked a batter in the first and gave up a single to
Sean Lawlor in the third. Knowles got 10 batters to fly out and added two more ground outs to add to his three strikeouts.
JT Hintzen, Chris Savage and Cameron Hanes kept the Saints scoreless. Hanes, who worked the ninth, recorded his seventh save of the season as he stranded a lead-off walk.
Villaman had two singles and the lone run batted in for the Moccasins.
Ashworth tossed seven innings, scattered six hits and allowed the run. He struck out five batters and threw 96 pitches.
Dante Pagano and
Ethan Jones each worked an inning in relief.
Ja'Kobi Dasher had Flagler's other base hit.
Flagler has another tough team on the horizon, No. 29 University of South Carolina Aiken this weekend. The series, at Aiken, will start on Friday (March 31) at 7 p.m.
