ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University was able to plate four runs in the last two innings to rally past Flagler College 5-2 in a non-conference baseball game at Drysdale Field Tuesday night.
Embry-Riddle improved to 2-1 while Flagler fell to 3-1.
In the eighth is when the Eagles took the lead. A.J. Mazzurco led off the inning with a flare that fell into right-center field and Robbie Hanlon drew a walk which chased Flagler reliever
Nick Martinez (0-1) from the game with the Saints leading 2-1.
MacLain Larson came on to face Jonathan Camp who lined a pitch that would have gone up the middle, but Larson took the line drive off his lower abdomen. Larson was able to collect himself after a couple of minutes and stayed in the game. Zach Howard hit a grounder towards the hole in the left side of the infield, but
Jeremy Taylor was able to gather the ball and throw across the diamond for the first out. Mazzurco scored the tying run on that play.
After the next batter was hit by a pitch to load the bases,
Ethan Jones came in to replace Larson. The first batter Jones faced, Christopher Medina, he hit with a pitch which forced in the eventual winning run in Hanlon. Jones struck out the next two batters but the Saints trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the eighth.
Flagler went in order in the bottom of the inning. The Saints only sent three batters to the plate in seven of the nine innings.
The Eagles got two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Mazzurco hit a one-out single to left-center and Camp was hit by a pitch. Howard followed with a two-run double to left-center which scored both base runners.
In the Flagler ninth,
Igor Baez was able to draw a two-out walk, but Kyle Lugar came on to face
Cole Ondrejka and induced a fly out to center field to end the game.
Tim Retamoza (1-0) picked up the win in relief for Embry-Riddle. He tossed one scoreless inning. Lugar recorded his first save of the season.
Mazzurco collected two singles and scored two runs and Camp also had two singles and he scored one run. Howard finished with three runs batted in.
Martinez took the loss for the Saints after tossing three-plus innings. He only allowed one hit, but he surrendered two runs. Martinez walked a batter, hit a batter and fanned two.
Luke Cooksey started and tossed four innings and allowed three hits as well as an unearned run.
Ethan Crout hit an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning to give Flagler a 2-1 lead.
Dylan Jones hit a sacrifice fly.
Josh Pagliei hit a double and scored on Crout's hit.
Bobby Bassler hit a single and scored on Jones' sacrifice fly.
Flagler has a three-game weekend series at home coming up, Feb. 10-11, against Eckerd College.
